Sailing Stavoren
The Friesian city of Stavoren, the oldest city in Friesland, was an important trade hub during the hanseatic era. Nowadays it is a much-loved harbour town for sailers and one of the cities on the Elfstedentocht (Eleven cities skating tour). Stavoren has had city rights for almost a thousand years, and was the very first community in the Netherlands to get them.
Sailing Stavoren is a gateway for sailing across the IJsselmeer and to the Friesian lakes. It has many lovely outdoor cafes in summer, both near the harbour and on the city canals. No visit is complete without seeing the statue of the legendary Vrouwtje van Stavoren (the Stavoren widow), whose hubris is said to have brought the demise of the town.
