Sailing Marken
Marken used to be an island and fishing community in the Zuyderzee; nowadays it is a beautiful destination for a sailing trip. The peninsula is a firm favourite with sailing enthusiasts and tourists because of its lively harbour, historical shipyards and picturesque cottages. Marken has many listed buildings and attractions, such as the Het Paard van Marken lighthouse and the Marker Museum. With its narrow alleyways, historical cottages and traditional drawbridge, Marken is a protected townscape; walking through it feels like you’ve gone back in time.

Sailing trip to Marken programme
At ten o’clock in the morning we meet on the quay of the old Botter harbour in Monnickendam. We embark on the Orion and are welcomed with coffee, tea and a piece of traditional Dutch pastry. The historical sea-tjalk Orion was built in 1892 and has kept many of her traditional features, but she also has all the mod cons.
When everybody is ready we cast off and hoist the mainsail, setting a course for the Gouwzee and the Markermeer. The active sailors (experienced or not) can assist the crew with navigating or operating the helm, stays, leeboards and sheets. If you want to take it easy you can enjoy the beautiful views on deck or the comfort of the saloon. The waves, wind and water will make you forget all your worries.
Around midday we sail into the harbour, where a guide, dressed in traditional folk costume, waits to show us around the historical wooden cottages and the shipyards. Traditional colourful Marken costume goes back as far as the Middle Ages, and is characteristic for the former fishing community.
After the tour we walk back to Orion to enjoy a delicious ship’s lunch. We continue out journey across the Markermeer, with drinks and snacks to sustain you. We arrive back in Monnickendam harbour around five o’clock, ending our trip. It is also possible to extend the trip and include a delicious barbecue in the late afternoon.
