Sailing to Edam

Edam, the Cheese Capital of North-Holland. Formerly situated around a dam on the river E (or IJe), it grew and prospered through the cheese trade, fishing, and shipbuilding.

Cheese town, fishing and shipbuilding

Edam has had city rights since 1357, and what a city it is! The beautiful old centre is a sight to behold, and we always make time for a walk through it whenever the Orion moors in Edam harbour. Numerous wooden drawbridges, canals, centuries old buildings and the historical Groot shipyard make Edam the perfect destination for a day trip. In summer, the cheese market is a must-see on every Wednesday morning in July and August.

Programme Edam

There is plenty to do for sailing enthusiasts to become one with the elements during your trip. Learn how to operate our helm, sheets, stays and leeboards, and help the crew to navigate. Depending on what you like, we can also keep you busy with tacking, and raise as many sails as wind and time will allow.

Less actively inclined passengers can relax on deck or in the saloon, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings and the fresh air and sunshine.

In case of rain, our saloon is there to keep everyone dry. And if the weather gets uncooperative we can shorten the sails to keep sailing safely. Should it suddenly get stormy, we can trust our engine to get us safely to port.

10:00

The Orion is waiting on the old harbour quay. We enjoy a lovely cup of coffee or tea and some delicious traditional pastry while we wait for everyone to arrive.

10:30

When everyone is there, we cast off, raise the sails and start our beautiful sailing trip to Edam.

12:00

17:00

Zeilen monnickendam

Our sailing trip ends, as we return to the harbour of Monnickendam, unless we have decided to anchor in a quiet spot first and return later.
